Jake Wilson as of 11/15/13

Elite 3 Front 130/70HR18 -153.99
Elite 3 Rear 180/60HR16 - 218.94

But I have switched to Avon Cobras with the last change and I am just under 15k and down to the last 1/32(before 2/32s) on them so bought another set today from Jake Wilson and:

Front 130/70HR18 - 160.99
Reat 180/60HR16 - 191.94

Getting a little more from the Cobras without the howling, never going back to the E3's

We had a flat rear tire travelling through Lincoln, Nebraska last year, and Star City Motorsports, a Victory dealer, tapped us for $268.99 plus $102 in labor. Frontier Harley-Davidson stored our bike for free for two days over a holiday weekend, and they trailered our bike to the dealership for free. I hate to say this, but the Harley dealership treated us very well, and we didn't spend a dime there. The Victory dealer couldn't wait to take our money and kick us out the door!

Thank You Frontier Harley of Lincoln, Nebraska!

Ouch! That sounds painful. I haven't found a Victory dealer either I can say I'm truly happy with. Also, it has been my experience that pricing varies significantly among the different Victory dealers and I have seen costs vary for the purchase and installation of tires by as much as 200 dollars. I just ordered a Dunlop E3 180/60-16HR MT from Dennis Kirk for $208, best price I found. Also have a new rear brake rotor in the mail to replace mine that has way to much play at the rivets. I had two flats while touring last year- one in Montana that plugged and rode to Kalispell on & the Victory dealer there didn't have a tire? Had to use the Yamaha dealer down the street to get gouged. That tire took a nail in BFE WY and I plugged it on the roadside and now have several thousand miles on it & figured I'd go ahead & replace it for this years touring season- it's -14 this morning so it's a good time to go through the bike in a warm garage.

What do you like better about the Avons?

Do you feel like they handle any better? Different?

If you take your rear wheel in (off the bike) to get the tire changed out; is it advisable to remove the rear sprocket first; or is it not an issue, for removing and replacing the tire?

Man, they sure bent you over.

I have an guy up here who will mount and balance for $30.00 providing I bring just the wheel and tire to him.

I take no thought what the dealer will get out of it when I need something done, including when I need tires. I know of one dealer out of 4 dealers within a 3 hour ride that will do the whole job cheaper than if I got the tires off the internet and have my local dealer mount. The only problem is, they are 3 hours away, and that's a good problem. The other dealers out-price themselves by charging the top retail price, but that tells me they don't want to do tires. We all can save a few dollars by pulling the wheels ourselves and taking them to a dealer. If not, I would not complain if I had no other choice than pay the higher price if I want to ride. Complaining will not make them change their mind, and they are not wrong because they charge the upper end of the retail price.

No, it's not necessary.

I take most of you "do it yourselfers" have the gear to remove tire from rim/replace and balance the tire yourselves? Anybody have the self-adjusting ballancers? I have found here locally in Arizona the going shop rate for installation at authorized Vic repair shop is roughly 78 bucks/tire if bought elsewhere. The rate is 40 bucks/tire if you bring just the rim/tire in off the bike. I'm not a snob by any means, but I figure that I won't bother with all that if I wind up saving about 38 bucks/tire if I go through the trouble of removing them myself. The front is straight forward, but the rear looks like a PIA.

Here locally, if you purchase the tires through both shops I mentioned the installation is "free" as they put it, but the tires are marked up. This is through both Victory of Mesa and Arizona Victory in Tucson. I call both to see which one has the better deal when time to change out plus they will price match most of the time on tires. I got a quote today for 280 for the front and 315 for the rear out the door. It has also been my experience that if you just bring the rim/tire in a lot of places like to nickel and dime you, shop fees, environmental fees, disposal fees, KY jelly fees, and there you have it.

224 for the rear plus the 78 is 302 and 154 for the front plus labor is 232 bucks. At least at my neck of the woods it makes absolute sense to take the front tire in, but would only be saving about 13 bucks for the rear, which does not make much sense to hassle with. I'm sure the shops will periodically get online and price shop tires and adjust accordingly. Vlad.

Wow! That's steep, I've gotten used to paying around $23, they charged me the same when I went darkside.
I'm still too cheap th let them take $80 for doing the entire job.

I completely understand where you are coming from. I am accident prone and would not be a happy camper scarring a rim or worse, but the way shop prices are going and knowing for a fact I will continue riding as long as my health permits it would be a worthwhile deal to buy the gear needed to replace the tires myself. Unfortunately, Im not a fan of Harbor Freight since all the stuff I bought from them in the past was absolute junk.
